You know how you feel sometimes like you're just running into the same wall day after day? Yeah, I've been hanging out there lately. Stuck. So I decided to try something different last week. Ella was once again whining about not wanting to pick up anything. Instead of yelling or ranting about how I always get stuck picking up after everyone else, I gave her a little assignment. It hardly counts as an assignment, since she loves to write stories anyway. After she picked up her toys (grumbling and complaining the whole time, of course) and before I let her have computer time, I asked her to write a story with 11 lines (it was 11/11/11 . . . we'd already learned our 11 x's facts that day) about what would happen if no one picked up anything. I don't know if she got anything out of it, but I felt like I did something without resorting to yelling or getting angry. I'm trying. But it's haaaaaard. Anyway, here's Ella's story. Enjoy.
The World Where No One Picked Up
- by Ella Hulse
It was dirty, smelly, very, very,
very, very, very, very, very,
very messy. Everyone was
covered in toys, books,
games, work, bean bags,
baskets, tv's, computers, pianos,
violins, guitars, lamps, couches,
everything imaginable.
Imaginary wolves prowled
the streets and ice wolves
in the toys. That's what happened.
The end.

I've had V write assignments, too. And usually they make me laugh, because he has a wry sense of humor. Yup, it beats getting angry.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try that. This task is about to get more important because the house is going on the market. We are moving to Houston. Let me know if you have other ideas.
